TURBOdesign Suite 2024.1: Optimize your designs with the power of automation

TURBOdesign Suite is a unique aerodynamic and hydrodynamic 3D design software package that allows users to design, analyze and optimize all types of turbomachinery, such as axial, mixed-flow, or centrifugal pumps, compressors, fans, turbines and torque converters. Using the software, designers evaluate turbomachinery package size and performance predictions, perform detailed 3D blade design with 3D inverse design capabilities, analyze flow information per component, stage performances with turbomachinery specific 3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD), and automate exploration of the design space with automatic optimization capabilities.

In this article, we will highlight the major new features and enhancements in the 2024.1 release such as a new manufacturing modification function including flow and radial trimming, heat pump cycle and fast lookup algorithm for Real Gas Properties, extension of CAE integration with Siemens CCM+ and Ansys CFX to new applications, support for twin entry turbine Volutes in TURBOdesign Volute, support for multistage pumps in centrifugal pump meanline code TURBOdesign Pre, and more.

“High temperature heat pumps are playing a major role in decarbonisation of many industrial processes. The new cycle code for heat pump coupled with significant improvements in real gas algorithms used in TURBOdesign Suite , together with unique multi-point optimization capability and the direct set up of CFD cases for Ansys CFX and Siemens CCM+ should streamline the process of design optimization of high temperature heat pumps".

New Features in TURBOdesign Suite 2024.1

Reactive Response Surface  (RRS)
integrated in TURBOdesign1 is one of the most advanced optimizers available today which together with the unique features of 3D inverse design based optimization should enable rapid and accurate multi-objective optimization with very few  design evaluations.

CAE Integration
will enable any TURBOdesign1 case to be automatically meshed with the most suitable mesh topology in Ansys CFX or Siemens CCM+ and then run in these CFD codes and the results automatically post processed and returned to TURBOdesign1 and also an HTML report with all relevant information and plots from the CFD codes.

TURBOdesign Pre
has a new heat pump cycle code. This can read basic input requirements for the heat pump such as condenser and evaporator temperature and whether these is an economiser or not and then by coupling with the centrifugal compressor meanline code can provide a solution for the compressor stage for any working real gas substance.  There is also some enhancement to the chiller compressor cycle code.

New machine type for the meanline design of Heat Pump Cycle in TURBOdesign Pre

Furthermore, the automatic export of TURBOdesign1 geometry from the meanline code TURBOdesign Pre for centrifugal compressor now is benefiting from an optimized data base of blade loading which should mean that the initial design in TURBOdesign1 should provide an optimized solution. TURBOdesign Pre for centrifugal pump now supports multistage configuration with return channel. Also TURBOdesign Suite now supports liquid RGP files for Liquid Hydrogen applications, especially for rockets.

TURBOdesign1  has a new trimming function has a completely new workflow for manufacturing modification, including the functionality to map any thickness file to an existing geometry ( existing camber).  In addition the CAE integration function ( which enables automatic running of any design in TURBOdesign1 in Siemens CCM+ and Ansys CFX and post processing of the data) is extended to calculate speed lines for centrifugal compressors as well as axial fans with or without big inblock/outblock domains.

Also the CFD results are now brought back into the TURBOdesign1 project view.  Further enhancements have been made to meridional geometry and meshing functions in TURBOdesign1. A new traffic light system is introduced based on deviation.  The optimization function and CAE integration function in TURBOdesign1 gets further enhancement in the form of a duplicate button which can copy an existing set up. There are also improvements to the automatic machine learning range estimation system for optimization.

TURBOdesign Volute gets more detailed control for overhung volutes as well as support for twin entry turbine volute applications.

Playback our last webinar on TURBOdesign Suite 2024.1 release, where you will:

  • Learn how you can set up a heat pump problem from scratch in TURBOdesign Pre new cycle code coupled with the new optimised database of blade loading for centrifugal compressor for TURBOdesign1. This can enable rapid optimization of the heat pump and automatic evaluation of the performance on a given speed line by the automatic CAE integration function.
  • Discover how the radial and flow trimming function can be used to apply compressor design to cover a large range of capacity and pressure ratios.
  • Understand how the new CAE integration function works for axial fans for both Ansys CFX and Siemens CCM+.
