In this August update we'll take a look at some of recent news and updates from ADT. This month we've released two studies on pump design and our paper of the month, which looks at propeller fan design.
Design of a Propeller Fan using 3D Inverse Design
August's paper of the month explores how to design a propeller fan and establish guidelines for fan rotors with high aerodynamic efficiency and low noise.
With environmental factors playing an increasing role in fan design and manufacturing, 3D Inverse Design lets engineers create environmentally-friendly fans at much lower cost. In the paper you'll get the low-down on the three stages of the design process; inverse design, fine mesh CFD and experimental validation.
The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency Designs a Rocket Engine Turbopump
ADT have worked with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) to design a centrifugal pump stage in TURBOdesign1. TURBOdesign Suite and a 3D Inverse Design method to try to overcome "Stepanoff's Spell" in pump design. Using TURBOdesign1 they were able to explore unique designs outside of the conventional wisdom.
This case study looks at how they went about designing a compact centrifugal pump to achieve high energy density to reduce the weight, cost and development time of a rocket engine turbopump.
Design of a Strongly Interacting Diffuser Pump Stage
Our engineers carried out the design of an impeller and diffuser for a strongly interacting pump stage. In our review of the design process we take a look at the detailed flow structure and loss mechanism in a diffuser pump.
We also explore how the engineers redesigned the impeller and diffuser blade to reduce losses and improve stage efficiency.
Design Optimization of a Hydraulic Torque Converter
ADT engineers were asked to perform the hydrodynamic design of a torque converter by a leading automotive manufacturer. For this project the engineers used the 3D Inverse Design method to perform a hydrodynamic design optimization.
In this design, the client provided the design parameters and ADT performed a CFD simulation to identify areas for improvement. Engineers then carried out the redesign of all the torque converter components using TURBOdesign1.
TURBOdesign Suite 2020
We're continuing the countdown to the release of TURBOdesign Suite 2020. On our blog you can learn about the evolution of the new interface and why we've chosen to build a new system from the ground up, as well as see how TDS 2020 allows designers to quickly evaluate designs, thanks to real-time feedback provided by the GUI.
In our introductory webinar to show off the new features and functionalities of TUROdesign Suite 2020 we explored the powerful new features and showed it in action on the design of a centrifugal pump and axial fan.
